"AMGtech - now with more recalls!" (amgtech)

It was either show you pictures of this or eight explodey-holes and a pair of snails. Obviously, I knew you would all prefer a smart electric drive unit in a semi-dismantled state.
These suck to work on. No modular assembly connectors, clips every 3 inches in really terrible locations, all wires and hoses just knotted together in a messy jumble. And they’re just garbage that are constantly breaking down.

eight explodey-holes and a pair of snails.
Hopefully not from a pair of smarts, right? :O I’m driving my turbo 453 as of late.
The ED/EQ smarts still underwhelm me. At a time when even GM is getting in on the high range EV game, MB ignored the change of times and released an EV with no greater range (and sometimes worse range) than the previous generation. And they wonder why people aren’t buying them...

I think the worst things here, besides fuel distributor units on cars from the 60's-80's, is the the PTU unit on the FF aka the front diffs on the V12. Pure horror show.

Not like the backside of an Audi V8 or the innards of a 6.2L Mercedes turbo, but close enough.

Is that a plastic engine mount bracket (last picture)?

Hmmmmm so much fun to replace. Not my favorite job, but not the worst I have done, by a long shot.

You’ve not tried to replace the crank position sensor on a 452 without dropping the engine, have you?

heh. Yeah, I have a bunch of Audi V8s, going back to a V8 Quattro and continuing with several A8s with the 4.2L up through D4
The original ABZ was a model of simplicity and reliability... every subsequent generation has worshipped at the German altar of complexity, with a corresponding drop in reliability. Putting all the cam drive chain (and those crappy timing actuators) hardware BEHIND the engine was a masterwork of “Audi Service Tech Retirement Fund” generosity.

Good thing they also included that amazing removable firewall so you could access the back of the engine, right? Right?!
My long-held theory is that German engineers have a built-in bias that nobody keeps a car past 5 years, therefore nobody needs to worry about mechanical serviceability because deep down, mechanics are just failed engineers.

That’s fine. At least I wouldn't have to work on more of these.

Engineered by the Germans and the French, built by the French.
...The many problems my cars have suggests just one of those can be bad enough. *sweats*

I’ve always assumed it was some cultural feud between the German engineering trade federation and mechanics’ trade union, both of which sit at the Management Board Level at VAG and shoot spitballs at each other across the Board table.
On a D2 it’s hilarious to see the 35 individual screws holding the transmission pan in place. To do a “transmission fill-flush-filter” you can easily get to 33 of the 35 screws... but... to get to the last 2? Requires a complete exhaust system dis-assembly.
Douche. Bags.

Not engineered by normal Mercedes engineers that's for sure. Nothing about these feels German.

Even if you look at it that way, this car was built by le resistance. There's nothing German about it.

Hey AMGtech, would you happen to know the procedure for activating dyno mode on the C217 S63?
AMGtech - now with more recalls!

11/16/2019 at 08:57 | 2 |
Of course
Engine off, doors and hood closed, beginning the sequence with vehicle completely off: press start button once with your foot off of the brake, navigate to the odometer, press and hold the accept call button, and within a second of hitting that also press and hold the ok button. This will bring up the service menu.
That being said, this turns off all aids. Please do not use this if you're not familiar with the car and please do not use it on a public road or with other people around. Putting it in sport plus mode and esp in sport mode is better for the road if you're trying to have fun. It'll let you get out of line but can still save you if you go too far.

Thank you so much! Will the 4Matic+ system still distribute torque as it sees fit like normal or does it revert to a set torque split for dyno mode ?

So I tried it and I couldn’t seem to get it to work with either of the two steering wheel ok buttons . You should use the one that controls the gauge cluster display right?

It might be easier to look up how to get into the service menu on YouTube.
